Blog Hop with Foam Board and StencilGirl Stencils

I haven't worked with Foam Board as an art material before so I decided to keep it simple and
make this 3-D butterfly.  The final dimensions are 15" high and 20" wide.

I started with these two sheets of Foam Board;
one was navy and the other was neon yellow.
(any colors would work, though)

1) Cut a shape from newsprint.  This will be your pattern.
I made a butterfly, but any simple shape will do.

2)  Place the newsprint pattern on the Foam Board and cut out two butterflies with a craft knife.

I chose Terri Stegmiller's 'Striped Leaves' stencil for its open and airy quality.

3)  Paint the dark side of the Foam Board with white gesso.  While the gesso is still wet, place the stencil on top, and rub through the stencil with a baby wipe to remove the gesso.  Let dry.

4)  On the other butterfly cut-out, apply paint with a make-up sponge through the stencil.
Use very little paint for best results.

5)  Work back and forth on both sides of the two cut-outs to allow for drying time.

 6)  Continue working in this manner; by (a) adding paint, positioning the stencil, and wiping off through the stencil with a baby wipe or (b) positioning the stencil and adding paint through the stencil
on all four sides until you are happy with the results.

*My Foam Board pieces weren't the same color to begin with, but it was a fun challenge to get them to coordinate, colorwise.

Add some detail, if you wish.

7)  When all four sides are completely dry, cover the edges with Faber-Castell's Pitt artist pen - big brush.   I used black.

8)  Now it's time for assembly.  Measure from top to bottom and cut a 3/8" slit half-way UP the center of one butterfly and another 3/8" slit half-way DOWN the center of the other butterfly.
(3/8 " is the width of the Foam Board)

9)  Paint the center (body) black, including the slit that was just cut out.

10)  Assemble them together so they form an "X".

11)  Add pipe cleaners for antennae.  They stick right into the Foam Board!

 Ta Da !

Try holiday or celebration shapes for centerpieces
or attach fishing line and hang from the ceiling.

And now for some PRIZES!!
